Suryaman named the doll Salma, which is derived from the Arabic word "salamah", meaning peace.

Her features are distinctly European but Salma's association with the West stops there.

Skimpy clothing is out and Muslim dress is in.

The mother-of-one started producing the doll last year after she saw her niece playing with a Barbie figure that she felt didn't embody Muslim values. "When I saw my niece playing with the Barbie doll, I thought I wish we had these dolls in traditional garb that fits our tradition. As we all know, children are easily influenced and often imitate their toys," said Sukmawati Suryaman.

Her popularity is growing in Indonesia, as many mothers see Salma as a welcome, alternative role model for their daughters.

"Barbie wears skimpy clothes while Salma dresses in a respectable way with a headscarf," "THE BETTER TO HIDE THE REMOTE DETONATOR" another Indonesian mother said.

Sales have gone up as Eid approaches, when Muslims celebrate the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.
