Well. all over the news the Phoenix has landed.....The polar region of Mars is going to be poked and prodded. Will it reveal life? Will it be bacterial, or something new. (The pheonix will only check for the presence organic compounds....at least thats what they tell us...lol)..How long will it be untill some chance shadow, or odd rock gets displayed as an artifact of another culture than ours....will Nasa cover it up?.....Now here on earth, we have found life in caves, filled with deadly gases, and high temperatures, in geysers, even a mile deep in the ocean floor, and on submerged volcanic vents. The presence of telltale octagonal cracks in the surface up there, pretty much conclude the fact that at one time water was in a liquid state up there. Taking this into account, is it so farfetched that there is something growing there? WASHINGTON - A malignant glioma — the diagnosis doctors gave Sen. Edward M. Kennedy — is the worst kind of brain cancer. Malignant gliomas strike almost 9,000 Americans a year. Survival statistics are grim — few live three years and for the worst subtype, half die within a year. (have another highball maybe that will fix it)
Who lasts longer — and some do — depends on exactly what form of glioma someone has, whether surgeons can cut most of it out, age and some other medical details.
Kennedy's doctors didn't mention surgery, suggesting that may not be a possibility for him.
"As a general rule, at 76, without the ability to do a surgical resection, as kind of a ballpark figure you're probably looking at a survival of less than a year," said Dr. Keith Black, chairman of neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
On the plus side, scientists are studying new approaches — adding a drug called Avastin to standard treatment, or even brewing up customized vaccines to help the body fight back. While they're still experimental, many glioma experts advise newly diagnosed patients to seek out specialized cancer centers and ask if they're a good candidate for a research study up front.

Hey Doc......is it a common trait for substance abusers to be lying manipulators?...I have had the unfortunate experience of dealing with a freind of the family that is (in my opinion) addicted to narcotics...She is on ms contin, phenergan, duragesic, fetanyl patch and the lollipops, and goes to the ER frequently for "migrains".....I have seen many "seekers" in the ER, and all of them exhibit some similar traits....an elaborate story of how they were "injured" and the whole long drawn out HX of how they can't seem to follow up with a regular MD but can show up in the ER....anyhow I was just curious...is the manipulative behavior a side effect of the drugs, withdrawal behavior, or a blend of the two, or just their base possibly addictive personality......anyhow the reason I ask this is just for my own knowledge, and would like the opinion of a substance abuse specialist......thanks....riff

I am all for research, and advancing medical science, but sometimes even if the intent is good it can be a bit "scary"....I'm not going to get into the "life-vs-soul" stuff, inherant in the use of human eggs and sperm, I'll leave that for others to argue about, but the thing that scares me is Do we know what we are doing? What kind of horror would we be capable of unleashing, if the knowledge fell into the hands of really bad people......science fiction is repleat (like that? I used a fancy word he he) with stories about genetic manipulation of humans with horrible results.
