A question for the good "Doc"

@ 12:42 PM (2 months, 8 days ago)
Hey Doc......is it a common trait for substance abusers to be lying manipulators?...I have had the unfortunate experience of dealing with a freind of the family that is (in my opinion) addicted to narcotics...She is on ms contin, phenergan, duragesic, fetanyl patch and the lollipops, and goes to the ER frequently for "migrains".....I have seen many "seekers" in the ER, and all of them exhibit some similar traits....an elaborate story of how they were "injured" and the whole long drawn out HX of how they can't seem to follow up with a regular MD but can show up in the ER....anyhow I was just curious...is the manipulative behavior a side effect of the drugs, withdrawal behavior, or a blend of the two, or just their base possibly addictive personality......anyhow the reason I ask this is just for my own knowledge, and would like the opinion of a substance abuse specialist......thanks....riff

  1. Wow!! She is on the good stuff, all controlled substances. Apparently, she does a lot of "Doctor Shopping." Any evidence of her buying the stuff from the streets? There is a danger there. You don't know what these guys are doing to the stuff. What about family members? Any of them getting Rxs for her? I would suggest that you read, "Co-Dependency, No More." The authoress' last name is "Beatty, or Beattie." You can go to Amazon.Com and type in the name of this book. It is an excellent source regrding your question. Substance abusers are big time manipulators. They have to be in order to pay for their habits. If she is not ready for treatment, don't push her. Because it will come down to, "Whose Treatment Is It, The Patient's Or Yours." Good luck!

  3. Knew of a guy that did have some legit back injury but used it to scam for all sorts of drugs. Some of the ERs told him to stay away.

  4. You could say she "shopped"..a wee bit..lol....anyhow, she also has delusional behavior, and makes up things them behaves as if they are true.....My other half had a bout a asceptic menningitis, (possibly fungal in origin, we were cleaning up a cabin out on the river after a flood a year before...it was awful moldy)and this "friend" actually beleived she was faking it to get attention from her, then said some other bizzare claims that we won't go into...any how was just curious...riff
