Just a comparison....Ike -vs- Katrina

I don't have all the facts yet, but from what I am seeing there is a fundamental difference between how the people behaved and managed the two storms...

Evacuation......Katrina, huddle the masses in a sports arena, in ground zero, empty school buses, slow to get the word out to escape.prisons just opened up and inmates told to "git"
                     Ike,  Get out , if you don't its your fault, evacuated quickly, a few gas supply problems, for the most part people got the hell out, of the dangerous areas.

Looting, overall behavior...........Katrina, mass looting...."I needs this to survive"...so you are going to .....eat that color TV?....shooting at rescue workers, rape gangs, the super dome was totally trashed, evacuees moved out, never went back, rampant crime rates in the areas when the evacuees settled.   Ike...still a little early, but I haven't heard of any body raped or shot, very little looting a few breaking and entering s.

Aftermath....Katrina...still rebuilding, took weeks to get spotty power in some areas, even longer to get some of the major businesses open, evacuees get a free ride for over three years now, and whine about what the government didn't do, yet sat on their asses and didn't help themselves.....Ike....Galveston's Mayor telling people "don't come back yet it's not safe", power restored in the majority of the affected areas and water being restored, all in record time, in addition to that, no credit cards  being issued,  no FEMA trailers, to house the New squatters.

Just to be fair, New Orleans did get heavily damaged, and to a greater extent than Houston, Galveston area, but the big question is "Why"...would it have anything to do with building a city way below sea level and relying on substandard levees to hold up, or the heavy concentration of slums, replete with even crappier buildings, and way overpopulated residents, either too stupid, uneducated or angry and distrusting to listen? ..................You be the judge.....riff

  6. I don't know. But I do know my house insurance went up this year about 20%, and considering Ike I'll bet they'll want to go up again next year.

It gets worse, there is a Texas law regarding private ownership of beach front property, the space from high tide to low tide is PUBLIC property....period.....Now if Ike comes in and relocates the high tide low tide area, due to storm erosion, and it just so happens to go under your building or back porch ect.....you are out of compliance, and have to forfeit or move to get back in.....sucks don't it, but its in all the deeds, that you have that risk, so it.s not like they werent told.....but it still kinda sucks....riff
