(Newser) – Israeli warplanes continued bombarding  the Gaza Strip for a fourth day today, pushing the death toll close to 400, reports the New York Times. Israel vowed to continue the operation until all rocket fire from Gaza has ceased and Hamas' will is broken. "There is no room for a ceasefire," says Israel's foreign minister.

A barrage of Hamas rocket and mortar fire in response to the attacks killed four Israelis yesterday. Rescuers in Gaza are pulling relatives from the remains of buildings leveled by the attacks, and overwhelmed hospitals are struggling to cope. Families desperate for news are huddled around radios, and Hamas gunmen are publicly executing people suspected of collaborating with Israel. The border area has been declared a closed zone, leading many to believe an Israeli ground assault is imminent.

(Newser) – A British missionary couple have been sentenced to a year's hard labor in one of Africa's toughest prisons for calling the despotic president of Gambia "a madman" in an email, reports the Times of London. The parents of three apologized for the insult, hoping for leniency.

“They have shown no respect for the country, the government and the president of the republic," said the judge, who meted out the maximum sentence. "I will send a clear message to the offenders." Amnesty International has condemned the inhumane conditions at the prison where the couple will serve their sentence.

I am currently working on a small generator, as a test run on building a bigger one...one word of warning.....When handling neodymium magnets, don't be fooled by the "small" size...the ones i'm playing with are 1 inch x1/2 inch disk, each with an approximate pull weight of 48 pounds each!....I inadvertantly got the skin on my thumb caught between two of them, and now have a "nice" blood blister to drain....ouch.

In a recent half-hour interview with the News, Kennedy said "you know" over 200 times. Other interviews also contained scores of "you knows" and a liberal sprinkling of "ums."

(Newser) – Regardless of the outcome of former anchor Dan Rather's lawsuit against CBS for his firing over a George Bush National Guard story, one man is not going to be pleased: the president. The case is bound to revisit embarrassing charges that Bush received favorable treatment and dodged requirements serving in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam war, reports the Guardian.

Rather was fired for airing a story on Bush's record based on falsified documents. But other evidence in Bush's service history indicates that some of the details of the story that the president ducked duty requirements are true. Rather is suing CBS for $70 million, claiming that he was axed so CBS could curry favor with the White House.

(Newser) – Saying Cuba’s finances “don’t square up,” President Raul Castro called for belt-tightening measures in the wake of three hurricanes and a global recession that have hobbled the communist nation. Newser) – Israeli troops massed at the border today as Gaza's death toll hit at least 300 following fresh Israeli air strikes overnight. Bombs decimated a mosque and family home—reportedly killing 5 children—as well as a university Israeli officials said contained explosives labs that aid Hamas' insurgency, CNN reports. Israeli leaders pledged to continue fighting until Hamas relents, in defiance of the UN. Both sides blame the other for striking first.(But we can't call the frequent rocket launches since the cease fire started, attacking first now can we Hamas?)

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert made plans to activate 7,000 Israeli reservists as ground troops and tanks moved toward Gaza yesterday. Hamas has reportedly launched 110 rockets since Saturday when the Israeli assault began. Black smoke fills the streets of Gaza, abandoned except for ambulances rushing the wounded to jam-packed, unequipped hospitals. Israel has allowed in some medical and food supplies.
