Talk about a dumb idea...a little global warming insanity
Scientists are proposing a stunning rescue project right out of a science fiction movie to save the earth from global warming: a massive 100,000-square-mile mirrored "sun shade." Trillions of tiny mirrors would be blasted by a cannon into space a million miles above earth to deflect the sun's rays under the plan, reports the Daily Telegraph. University of Arizona mastermind Dr. Roger Angel is confident the $350 trillion project could get off the ground in some 20 years.
Angel has already secured money from NASA for a pilot project. "What we have developed is certainly effective, and a method guaranteed to work," said Angel. We're talking about a project which will stop global warming for centuries to come. The sums involved sound huge, but in the greater scheme of things it's a price worth paying."
Now for some flies in the ointment...lol
I have seen this discussed months ago on "project earth" or something like that...an envriomental show about "geoengineering", and exploring different concepts to reverse or at least neutralize man's effect on the climate......The idea won't work.....The enviromental impacts of just getting the mirrors into space are worse than the effect it's trying to prevent...(that is a lot of rockets burning fuel to get into space)...plus the global economy would be adversely altered to build the mirrors in the first place...not to mention the energy production needed to manufacture the "trillions" of mirrors....glass has to be melted somehow, then the needed metals to make the mirrors reflect, the guidence controls and thrusters to deploy the mirrors themselves and keep their alignment in the target objective....all would require resources that would worsen the problem here......treating the symptom and not the cause.....The concept would be workable though.....if the mirrors were to be deployed in such a way as to not cause all the aforementioned issues.(from astroid mining or lunar mining ect) and not burning up resources on earth...the effect is remarkable, and would probably work well...and would not be detectable to the unaided eye, in regards to light intensity, and it would enable us to alter the amount of light reaching earth, and in so doing give us a means of offsetting any warming or cooling for that matter, with just an alignment change. But what of the production of the pollutants or greenhouse gases here?...It would do nothing to change the root causes that man is adding to the cyclical climate change equasion
