ScienceDaily (July 23, 2008) — A new fossil discovery- the first of its kind from the whole of the Antarctic continent- provides scientists with new evidence to support the theory that the polar region was once much warmer.

Scientists made a new fossil discovery in the Dry Valleys of the East Antarctic region. The fossils (ostracods) come from an ancient lake - 14 million years old - and are exceptionally well preserved, with all of their soft anatomy in 3-dimensions.

The discovery by an international team of scientists is published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. It involved researchers from the University of Leicester, North Dakota State University, the British Geological Survey, Queen Mary University of London, and Boston University.

Dr Mark Williams from the Department of Geology at the University of Leicester said: "This is a rare occurrence in the fossil record - but is the first of its kind from the whole of the Antarctic continent.

"Notwithstanding the significance of the fossil preservation, the presence of lake ostracods at this latitude, 77 degrees south, is also of great note. Present conditions in this Antarctic region show mean annual temperatures of minus 25 degrees C. These are impossible conditions to sustain a lake fauna with ostracods." (Gee you mean the earth was warmer, and then colder, then warmer, then colder....ect....you get the point)

"The fossils therefore show that there has been a substantial and very intense cooling of the Antarctic climate after this time interval that is important for tracking the development of the Antarctic icesheet -- a key factor in understanding the effects of global warming.

"The fossil ostracods of the Dry Valleys signal a high latitude lake viable for animal colonisation that indicates a dramatic change in the climate of this region, from tundra conditions 14 million years ago, to the intensely cold continental interior climate experienced today."

The researchers point out that there is no evidence to suggest the fossil discovery points to a once widespread Antarctic lake ostracod fauna: "It is most likely their introduction was by chance, perhaps via birds as dispersal of ostracod eggs attached to the feathers or feet of migratory birds is an important influence on modern ostracod distribution."

The ostracods were discovered by Richard Thommasson, an undergraduate student, during screening of the sediment in Prof. Allan Ashworth's lab at North Dakota State University.

The research was funded by NSF grants to Allan Ashworth (at NDSU) and Dave Marchant (at Boston University).

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Video footage of an Israeli soldier firing what appears to be a rubber bullet at point-blank range at a bound and blindfolded Palestinian detainee has led to an army investigation. (Gee, he acted like a palestinian....oops bad move bro)

The incident occurred three weeks ago during protests in the village of Nilin against the construction of Israel's barrier in the occupied West Bank.

A video, taken by a villager and released on Sunday by the Israeli rights group B'Tselem, showed a soldier firing his rifle toward a Palestinian detained at the protest. The rifle appeared to have been modified to fire rubber-coated metal bullets.(at least he didn't behead the bastard with a dull knife, like daniel pearl, or drag his dead body down a road behind a truck and dump him in a ditch, like some of our fallen have had done to them)

The protester had been tied up and blindfolded and was standing only a few centimeters (inches) away.

B'Tselem said the man sustained bruises.(Oh poor baby)

An army statement said a military doctor who examined him found he had been "very slightly wounded with swelling to a toe on his right foot."

"This was a serious incident in stark violation of the (military's) rules of conduct and safety," the army statement said. "The advocate-general ... ordered a military police investigation into the incident upon receiving the footage." (As well he should, acting like the enemy only makes you just as much of a low life)

Israeli media reports said the soldier who fired the shot had been arrested. Asked about the reports, a military spokesman said: "When the investigation is over and the results are in, steps will be taken."......(That don't sound good for the sap who did it, but don't do the crime if you can't do the time....he should be better than that)

PHOENIX - Rapper DMX has been arrested at a Phoenix mall on a felony charge of taking the identity of another

Phoenix police Sgt. Andy Hill did not have details of the charge, as it stemmed from a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office case.

The sheriff's office did not immediately return a request for comment.

Hill says DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, was being taken Saturday for booking into the Maricopa County jail.

The musician/actor has had a recent string of run-ins with the law, including an arrest at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport earlier this month on outstanding warrants after he failed to appear in court.(Dumb ass, leave the damn drugs alone......they will ruin your life, but I forgot, that OK cuz you is O-G, word up homie........lol....riff

Woman accused of poisoning son in Pa. hospital

PITTSBURGH - A woman poisoned her infant son by repeatedly injecting salt water into his feeding tube at hospitals in Tennessee and Pittsburgh in what she claimed were attempts to hasten the death of a suffering child, authorities said Wednesday.

Four-month-old Noah King is in critical condition with sodium poisoning at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and police said they believe the baby's medical problems were caused entirely by his mother.

Amber Brewington, 21, was charged with attempted homicide and police said she told investigators she had injected her son with salt water five or six times, and that she had severe postpartum depression.

A hospital worker called police late Tuesday after a nurse reported seeing Brewington disconnect the boy's feeding tube. Brewington was carrying a pink camouflage backpack with a container of Morton salt, two bottles filled with salt water and a syringe, police said.

Noah had been a patient at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., where he had suffered unexplained seizures and possible brain damage, the mother told police.

Vanderbilt hospital spokesman John Howser said Noah was treated there for a documented disease and was transferred to the Pittsburgh hospital due to its expertise in treating the symptoms he was showing. He declined to discuss the boy's care in more detail.

Noah arrived at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh on July 9. Upon arrival, he had one of the highest recorded levels of sodium, even for an adult, according to a Pittsburgh police affidavit.

Brewington admitted giving Noah another syringe of salt water on Sunday, though she denied she was trying to do it again when she was caught by the nurse Tuesday, police said.

Pittsburgh Police Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki, however, said Wednesday: "We believe last night was another attempt to deliver more salt water or sodium to her child."

Too much sodium can cause neurological problems and, at its most severe, can cause death. Officials at the Pittsburgh hospital wouldn't discuss specifics of Noah's condition.

Investigators believe all Noah King's illnesses were "related to what she's done," Stangrecki said. "But we have to follow up with all the medical facilities that he's been at ... and try to make that determination of whether he was sick as part of an illness or from ingesting sodium."(Bury that sow under the jail) Brewington, of Duck River, Tenn., also was charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. She was ordered held on $50,000 bail at an arraignment Wednesday. Police didn't whether she had an attorney.

The boy's father has been questioned, but is not suspected of wrongdoing and faces no charges, Stangrecki said.

Brewington's two other children are being cared for by a relative, said Rob Johnson, a spokesman for the Tennessee Department of Children's Services.

Hezbollah handed the bodies of two Israeli soldiers to the Red Cross on Wednesday to be exchanged for Lebanese prisoners held by Israel in a deal viewed as a triumph by the Lebanese Shi'ite guerrilla group

Many Israelis see it as a painful necessity, two years after the soldiers' capture sparked a 34-day war with Hezbollah that killed about 1,200 people in Lebanon and 159 Israelis.

Two black coffins were unloaded from a Hezbollah vehicle at a U.N. peacekeeping base on the Israel-Lebanon border after a Hezbollah official, Wafik Safa, disclosed for the first time that army reservists Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev were dead.(see what the isrealis are doing to placate them murdering bastards....I bet you it will be repaid by more rockets and suicide bombers in the day care or shopping mall)

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) took the coffins and drove them into Israel. Safa later said DNA tests conducted by the ICRC had verified the identity of the soldiers. The Israeli army said it had started its own checks.

"We are now handing over the two imprisoned Israeli soldiers, who were captured by the Islamic resistance on July 12, 2006, to the ICRC," Safa said at the border. "The Israeli side will now hand over the great Arab mujahid (holy warrior) ... Samir Qantar and his companions to the ICRC."(returning a murdering slimeball to more murdering slime balls)

In a deal mediated by a U.N.-appointed German intelligence officer, Israel was to free Qantar and four other prisoners.

Qantar had been serving a life prison term for the deaths of four Israelis, including a four-year-old girl and her father, in a 1979 Palestinian guerrilla attack on an Israeli town.

The fathers of the two Israelis soldiers spoke of their pain at watching the television pictures of their sons' coffins.

"It is not easy to see this, although there was not much surprise to it. But ... confronting this reality was difficult, yes," Shlomo Goldwasser told Israel radio.

Zvi Regev said on Army Radio: "It was very moving when we saw it. We couldn't watch too long. It was a terrible thing to see, really terrible. I was always optimistic, and I hoped all the time that I would meet Eldad and hug him."(sorry pop....your dealing with the scum of the earth, cowardly people who hide behing faith when it is conveinent for them)

An ICRC truck later drove into Lebanon with the bodies of eight Hezbollah fighters killed during the 2006 war.

Israel will also hand over the remains of nearly 200 Arabs killed trying to infiltrate northern Israel. Hezbollah will return the remains of Israeli soldiers killed in south Lebanon.

The deal also calls for Israel to release scores of Palestinian prisoners at a later date as a gesture to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

HEZBOLLAH READY TO CELEBRATE

Hezbollah has dubbed the exchange "Operation Radwan," in honor of "Hajj Radwan," or Imad Moughniyah, the group's military commander who was assassinated in Syria in February.

Yellow Hezbollah flags and banners fluttered across south Lebanon and along the coastal highway from the border village of Naqoura to the capital, Beirut. "Liberation of the captives: a new dawn for Lebanon and Palestine," one banner read.

Israel denounced the planned festivities.

"Samir Qantar is a brutal murderer of children and anybody celebrating him as a hero is trampling on basic human decency," Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's spokesman Mark Regev said.

For some Lebanese, the exchange demonstrated the futility of the devastating conflict with Israel two summers ago. (at least the two fathers can bury their sons now....so sad)

"There shouldn't have been a war in 2006. A lot of lives were lost," said Rami Nasereddine, an 18-year-old student in downtown Beirut. "It's good that the prisoner exchange is taking place. Israel should have done that two years ago."

The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas said the prisoner swap strengthened its own position in demanding the release of hundreds of long-serving prisoners in exchange for Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier captured two years ago near the Gaza Strip.

"This is a great victory to the resistance and to Hezbollah and it is a festival for the Lebanese prisoners and their families," Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri said in Gaza.

Israeli President Shimon Peres set the prisoner swap in motion on Tuesday by pardoning Qantar, reviled in Israel for his role in the 1979 attack. Qantar, aged 17 at the time, has said the father was shot by Israeli soldiers who also wounded him, and that he doesn't remember what happened to the girl. (yeah right.......go F*** a camel....murderer)

Peres said he felt "bitter and unbearable pain" at the decision, but that Israel was obliged to retrieve its soldiers.

Olmert had described Qantar as the last bargaining chip for word on Israeli airman Ron Arad, missing since he bailed out over Lebanon in 1986. Israel said a report supplied by Hezbollah on Arad as part of the swap had failed to clarify his fate.

The other Lebanese prisoners being freed along with Qantar, a Druze, were named as Maher Qorani, Mohammad Srour, Hussein Suleiman and Khodr Zeidan. They were to be welcomed with rallies and fireworks in Lebanon, which declared a public holiday.

- An officer's squad car was nearly totaled in a crash less than a half hour into his first day on the city police force. Officer Tim Pochron was inside his house early Monday when someone smashed into his new squad car parked outside. Pochron was 29 minutes into the first day of his new job when his parked squad car was struck," Hobart police Lt. Steve Houck said.

A man drove his car into a tree and Pochron's car, police said. The man tested positive for drugs, was arrested and taken to a hospital.

The force of the collision bent the rear axle of the squad car.

Pochron, 26, was sworn in last week. He was to start his first day Monday on the morning shift. He previously worked as a police officer in the neighboring Lake County city of Lake Station.

CINCINNATI - Democrat Barack Obama received a prideful welcome from the annual NAACP convention Monday night, but in a stirring speech to the nation's oldest civil rights organization, he nonetheless insisted blacks must show greater responsibility for improving their own lives(I feel that applies for anybody regardless of race gender or age...withen reason on the age)

The man who could become the first black president urged Washington to provide more education and economic assistance. He called on corporate America to exercise greater social responsibility. But he also received his most lusty applause as he urged blacks to demand more of themselves.(Bill Cosby got it and told it and got tore up over it)

"If we're serious about reclaiming that dream, we have to do more in our own lives. There's nothing wrong with saying that," Obama told a crowd estimated at 3,000. "But with providing the guidance our children need, turning off the TV set and putting away the video games; attending those parent-teacher conferences, helping our children with their homework, setting a good example. That's what everybody's got to do."

He added: "I know some say I've been too tough on folks talking about responsibility. NAACP, I'm here to report, I'm not going to stop talking about it. Because as much I'm out there to fight to make sure that government's doing its job and the marketplace is doing its job, ... none of it will make a difference — at least not enough of a difference — if we also don't at the same time seize more responsibility in our own lives."(Translation.......get off yer ass, and educate yourself, blame yourself for your life then do something about it)

Amid building cheers, Obama declared: "When we are taking care of our own stuff, then a lot of other folks are going to be interested in joining up and working with us and taking care of America's stuff. We can lead by example, as we did in the civil rights movement. Because the problems that plague our community are not unique to us. We just have them a little worse, but they're not unique to us."

Obama, who grew up without his father, has spoken and written at length about issues of parental responsibility and fathers participating in their children's lives. Yet a similar speech by the Illinois senator on Father's Day prompted an awkward rebuke from the Rev. Jesse Jackson, a Democratic presidential contender in 1984 and 1988, a protege of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and a fellow Chicago political activist.

Jackson apologized last week after being caught saying on an open microphone that he wanted to castrate Obama for speaking down to blacks.(I beleive jackson meant the apology when I see Hitler apologize for the treatment of Jews....but Hitler is dead, so theres your answer)

Republican candidate John McCain is scheduled to address the NAACP's 99th meeting on Wednesday. President Bush was criticized for not speaking at the convention until 2006 — his fifth year in office.(Thats right he said "I don't speak to rascist organizations"..or something like that)

Obama spokeswoman Linda Douglass denied the candidate was trying to boost support among white voters with his own "Sister Souljah" moment. Addressing a black audience in 1992, Democrat presidential candidate Bill Clinton accused the hip-hop artist of inciting violence against whites. Some black leaders, including Jackson, criticized Clinton, but it helped reinforce his image as a politician who refused to pander.

"It's not just a speech aimed at black audiences. It's aimed at all parents," Douglass said. Noting Obama also called for more corporate and government responsibility, she added: "This is a larger theme of responsibility."(I don't approve of his other veiws but this one I have to agree on)

While Jackson complained about such Obama speechmaking, other civil rights activists from the NAACP disagreed. They think Obama is doing a good job balancing his role as a black candidate with the need to speak to all races.(Since WHEN has that rascist jackass not complained about something?)

"He can't be totally focused on the black community," said Kelvin Shaw, of Shreveport, La. Shaw said he is most interested in what Obama plans on nationwide economic issues like rising oil prices, household costs and jobs. "We need to be talking about not one race, but what affects all people."

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory, the city's first directly elected black mayor, disputed Jackson's argument that Obama is ignoring other important issues for blacks such as unemployment, mortgage foreclosures and the number of blacks in prison.

"I think he absolutely has," Mallory said. Besides his messages about responsibility, Mallory said Obama has talked about jobs, health care, education and other "areas where black people are disproportionately affected."(affected or self inflicted???)

Civil rights veteran Julian Bond, the NACCP board chairman, drew loud applause in a speech Sunday night when he described Obama's candidacy as a milestone.

"The country seems proud, and I know all of us here are, that a candidate campaigning in cities where he could not have stayed in a hotel 40 years ago has won his party's nomination for the nation's highest office," Bond said.

LONDON - In a case that changed the face of air travel, three men charged with a plot to kill trans-Atlantic airline passengers with bombs in soda bottles admitted Monday they intended to cause explosions.

But the men appealed to the jury to believe their story — that they wanted to stage an elaborate publicity stunt at one of London's iconic sites to promote a film, rather than commit mass murder.(AND JUST HOW STUPID DO YOU THINK WE IGNORANT INFEDELS ARE MOHAMM-MUTT)

The men are charged with a plot to kill hundreds of passengers at the height of the summer vacation season. When police discovered the plot in August 2006, airports around the world immediately changed their security procedures.

As security guards examined every bag by hand, passengers dumped bottles of water, wine and perfume. Tents were erected in airport parking lots as passengers waited, sometimes for days, to board flights. Airports and airlines needed weeks to recover from the chaos.

Monday's change of plea on some of the charges comes as the case winds to a close, infuriating prosecutors who say the men simply wanted to sway jurors before deliberations on the main charge against them: conspiring to kill thousands of airline passengers on flights over the Atlantic Ocean or U.S. cities.(Hang their butts....sernd them to those clap ridden 72 virgins they seem so fond of)

"This was no propaganda video, no documentary, no exercise or stunt — this was for real," prosecutor Peter Wright said. "Human beings ready, able and willing to commit carnage for the sake of Islam."(Stick to your guns dude)

He told jurors the men the men were "almost ready to go" when they were arrested in raids in and around London.

In his opening statement in April, Wright said officers found a computer memory stick in Abdulla Ahmed Ali's pocket with details of flights from London's Heathrow Airport to Chicago, New York, Boston, Denver, Miami and Montreal. He was not interested in return bookings, prosecutors say.

The three — Ali, 27, Assad Sarwar, 28, and Tanvir Hussain, 27 — pleaded guilty to the charge of conspiring to set off explosions, but still say they are innocent of conspiracy to murder, a charge for which they are still being tried.(bullshit)

The three admitted they conspired to cause explosions, but deny intending to wreak havoc on passenger jets. Ali, the alleged ringleader, testified early in the trial that he and Sarwar wanted to promote an anti-Western documentary with an explosion — although it is not clear whether the film was actually made. Ali said he hoped a small, nonfatal, bombing — at a site such as Britain's Houses of Parliament, an oil refinery, or an airport — would jolt Londoners and draw attention to the movie.(It is ONLY a small non-fatal nuclear bomb, we are just making a video......yeah right camel boy.....Im just making a video about hunting feral radical islamic jihadist)

The suspects said the movie was intended to record injustices against Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan.(Like Daniel Pearl being beheaded, soldiers being tortured and drug through the streets.....F-YOU )

Prosecutors in the 3-month-long trial accuse the five — along with three other co-defendants — of planning an in-flight bombing. If found guilty, they face a maximum life sentence.(Death is too good for these bastards, make them slop hogs for the rest of their lives)

"Each was prepared to kill and to do so on a wholly indiscriminate basis, irrespective of age, belief, sex and to do so without the slightest blink of an eye," Wright said. "(The attack) was intended to be an act of terrorism to not only alter aviation history but also to strike a blow on behalf of radicalized Islamists the world over."

Wright told Woolwich Crown Court in London the defendants wanted "to murder as many civilian passengers as possible."

The eight men are accused of stockpiling enough hydrogen peroxide to create 20 liquid bombs, although they did not create any viable explosives.

"We did not want to kill or injure anyone," Ali testified last month.(Bullshit)

Ali, Sarwar, Hussain, along with two other defendants — Ibrahim Savant, 27, and Umar Islam, 30 — have also admitted to "conspiring to cause a public nuisance" by publishing the alleged martyrdom videos.
